HACKATHON
EU VS. VIRUS
In the Spring of 2020, I joined the virtual Hackathon team 'Survivors' in creating an app to combat COVID19. The team had already gone through phase one, and I was brought on to update the existing UX design, presentation deck, and submission video. Collaborating remotely with healthcare professionals, data scientists, and developers from Europe and New Zealand was challenging at times, but the overall experience was new and rewarding for me.
I worked on the project for two weeks, and during that time was able to:
- Learn Figma to redesign all the slides needed by the developer
- Conduct target persona and market research
- Redesign the presentation deck
- Write and record two separate scripts
- Write and record the final video submission (I did not edit the final video)
- Attend daily Skype meetings with the team
While I do not consider myself a UX designer, I think there was an improvement from the original design and I'm happy with everything we could accomplish in the short time period.
Some final screens created in Figma:

I collaborated with the developers to make screens that would be quick and easy to program as we wanted a working model done by the submission deadline.

Final submission video:
I wrote this script in an afternoon and filmed it the same day. I'm not totally comfortable in front of a camera, but I did it for the team! As I was technically part of a team representing Greece, the video was edited by a film producer there.
Final presentation video:
I wrote the script and used a voiceover app on my computer to record the sound.
Target Personas:
I wrote five different target personas for people who would use our app. This info helped us throughout the process and gave us ideas for how the app could be developed in the future.
While the information is made up, it is based on the feedback given by the healthcare professionals on my team. The color coding identifies touch points, challenging, opportunities, and questions.

Kind words from Kostas, our team leader and data scientist:
"Alex is an unbelievable talented graphic designer, a reliable co-worker, and has a great attitude. I was lucky enough to work with her during Hackathons vs Covid and I can say that she definettly loves her job and is exceptional at communicating her ideas. Her enthusiasm and relentless work ethic make her a pleasure to work with! She would be a great asset to any team!"
Here's an example of the initial designs the team started with.
(they were done in a short amount of time and were a perfect jumping off point for me)
